Hermsdorf is the competence centre for finished parts and additively manufactured products made of refractory metals – especially for the medical technology and glass melting industries. Our work is characterised by the production of parts of the highest quality and minimal tolerances. As a responsible company, we are not only committed to procuring raw materials "conflict-free", but also offer our customers sustainable handling of raw materials through our recycling programme.
Responsible raw material procurement
Extraction of raw materials contributes significantly to economic development in resource-rich countries. In regions of conflict and instability, however, raw material extraction and trade can be linked to the financing of violent conflicts as well as human rights violations (e.g. child labour). Our intention is therefore to do our utmost to ensure that our products do not contain metals (tantalum, tungsten, gold, tin) that contribute to conflict or serious human rights violations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) or other conflict-affected or high-risk areas (CAHRAs) as defined by the OECD Guidelines.
We operate in accordance with stringent purchasing guidelines and process only raw materials acquired from responsible and conflict-free sources. Our responsible supply chain management ensures the raw materials we use are of conflict-free origin and is purchased solely from suppliers that adhere to environmentally friendly and socially responsible conflict-free business practices. QSIL Metals Hermsdorf GmbH condemns all activities in connection with the illegal or unlawful exploitation of mineral resources, no matter where such activities take place. As part of this commitment we have implemented an on-going policy that aligns with the "OECD Due Diligence Guidance for responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas third edition" (OECD Guidance) and that the applicable due diligence obligations and provisions are complied with, such as in particular under "Regulation (EU) 2017/821 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2017 laying down supply chain due diligence obligations for Union importers of tin, tantalum, tungsten, their ores and gold from conflict-affected and highrisk areas".
We are a conflict-free smelter and conformant with the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process assessment protocols (RMAP) for tantalum.
Raw material procurement at QSIL Metals Hermsdorf GmbH is based on two principles: the continuous expansion of recycling activities, and the purchase of raw materials exclusively from suppliers with environmentally and socially sound business practices.
We continuously strive to become independent from surging volatility and speculations on the raw materials market. That is why we strongly focus on technology metal recycling to secure our conflict-free raw material supply chain. QSIL Metals Hermsdorf GmbH has unique expertise in recovering secondary materials as valuable commodities through environmentally-friendly and resource-efficient processes. Using innovative technologies, we are recycling increasing volumes of post-industrial scraps and turning them into high quality and high-performance technology metals.
Applications
Medical technology
QSIL is one of the leading suppliers of high-performance materials for state-of-the-art medical devices.
Industrial and plant engineering
QSIL produces refractory industrial equipment for the toughest industrial conditions.
Glass melting
QSIL manufactures energy-efficient glass melting electrodes for the glass industry that enable better control of glass melting processes.
Technologies
A number one priority for QSIL is our contribution to the environment. To advance our sustainability development, we offer customers the unique service of recycling spent or used products through our electron beam melting (EBM) furnace.
Our electron beam melting furnace in Hermsdorf has two electron beam guns to heat material (Mo, Ta, Nb) to 3,000 degrees Celsius. First and second melt capabilities achieve highest purities.
Our EDM equipment allows us to finish machine rolled WHA sheet, pure tungsten sheet, Mo parts for the medical industry and WHA blocks for medical and industrial applications. We achieve the highest levels of precision and detail.
Our CNC grinding equipment allows us to achieve highest precision parts with industry-leading tolerances below one micron. This is especially critical for our molybdenum parts for the medical industry.
